Guide · Vehicle registration

Every vehicle has its own registration and insurance rules.

Imports, speed pedelecs, classic cars, trailers, taxis, leases, trade plates, company vehicles: these situations fall outside the standard framework. Pick yours.

Nine situations outside the standard framework.
Import from the European Union
Import from an EU country

Before Belgian registration, three things: the certificate of conformity, the import roadworthiness test and the vehicle's customs clearance.

  • European certificate of conformity. The COC is provided by the seller.
  • Import roadworthiness test. Compulsory before registration.
  • Customs clearance. Clearance is handled by Customs and Excise, which issues the E705 signal. That signal certifies that the vehicle's position is in order, in particular for VAT if the vehicle is new for tax purposes, meaning less than six months old or under 6,000 km.
Procedure and forms: Customs and Excise and
  • The pink form is still required. The E705 signal attaches to it, it does not replace it.
  • Only then. Insurance sticker, then registration.
Our role

We insure the vehicle as soon as the import is cleared, and prepare the registration file.

The common thread

Insure first, register afterwards

Whatever the case, the logic does not change: the DIV will not register a vehicle without an insurance sticker. The one notable exception is the speed pedelec, where cover is not legally required, which does not mean you should go without.

  • O
    Classic car

From thirty years, less frequent roadworthiness testing and often a much lower premium.

  • Q
    Trailer over 750 kg

Its own plate, registration at the DIV and separate liability cover, compulsory.

  • SP
    Speed pedelec

Registration compulsory, helmet compulsory, insurance strongly advised.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions about special cases

  • Can I use my classic car to get to work?

Not day to day. The O plate excludes a regular commute, commercial use and paid transport. Leisure driving, on the other hand, is unrestricted.

  • Does my 600 kg trailer need separate insurance?

No. Below 750 kg it carries a replica of the towing vehicle's plate and follows its liability cover. We still check that your policy covers towing.

  • Do you need to insure a speed pedelec?

It has not been legally compulsory since 2019 in most cases, but your liability is undiminished. At 45 km/h an accident with a pedestrian is very expensive: we recommend it every time.

  • Who has to sign the form for a company vehicle?

An authorised representative of the company, with their name in capitals next to the signature, and the company number in the legal-entity section. The box-by-box detail is in our guide

A special case

We know the rules, and the insurance that goes with them.

Classic cars, trailers, taxis, company fleets: these risks cannot be placed with just any insurer. We put in competition the ones that genuinely accept them.
